Construction

High Divide Minerals provides versatile and economical talc solutions for the construction industry. From wood composites and drywall to roofing materials, CT® talc products enhance performance, improve process-ability, and support sustainable manufacturing practices.

CT® talc products are produced in a wide range of particle sizes to serve the diverse needs of the construction market. These products are UL 2908 certified and consist of 100% pre-consumer recycled materials. Their unique physical properties—such as hydrophobicity, plate-like shape, and oleophilic surfaces—make them valuable in wood fiber-polymer composites, drywall compounds, and asphalt shingles.

CT® Talc for Wood Composites

CT® Talc products are valuable components in wood fiber-polymer composites, such as decking, baseboards, and wood trim. They are hydrophobic and help disperse the wood fiber in the polymer matrix, commonly HDPE. The incorporation of talc acts as a processing aid, reducing energy consumption during extrusion. When added to the composite body, it enhances mechanical properties such as tensile strength, bending strength, and dynamic modulus. Talc-filled HDPE exhibits lower linear coefficients of thermal expansion (LCTE) compared to neat HDPE, providing dimensional stability and reducing warpage due to solar radiation. Additionally, CT® Talc products can be used in a shell layer that covers the wood composite body.

CT® Talc for Drywall Compounds

CT® Talc products also play an important role in drywall compound applications. The smooth, plate-like particles of CT® Talc enable the compound to be easily worked into a smooth surface that can be sanded to a fine finish. The overlapping of the platy particles helps reduce cracking during drying.

CT® Talc for Shingles

CT® Talc products are vital in shingle manufacturing and handling. Talc’s smooth surface acts as a lubricant during shingle extrusion, while its oleophilic properties prevent adjacent sheets of stacked shingles from sticking together. This is crucial when working in hot climates where high temperatures can cause shingles to fuse.

CT® talc enhances construction materials in two critical ways, offering both performance and process improvements across multiple applications.

Improved Mechanical and Dimensional Properties

In wood composites, CT® talc boosts strength, reduces warpage, and improves thermal stability, helping manufacturers produce more durable, weather-resistant products.

Enhanced Workability and Handling

Talc improves the finish and application of drywall compounds and acts as a lubricant and anti-blocking agent in shingles, simplifying manufacturing and on-site installation.
